Superlens based on metal-dielectric composites

چکیده
Pure noble metals are typically considered to be the materials of choice for a near-field superlens that allows subwavelength resolution by recovering both propagating and evanescent waves. However, a superlens based on bulk metal can operate only at a single frequency for a given dielectric host. In this paper, it is shown that a composite metal-dielectric film, with an appropriate metal filling factor, can operate at practically any desired wavelength in the visible and near-infrared ranges. Theoretical analysis and simulations verify the feasibility of the proposed lens.

Toward superlensing with metal-dielectric composites and multilayers
We report on the fabrication of two types of adjustable, near-field superlens designs: metal–dielectric composites and metal–dielectric multilayer films. We fabricated a variety of films with different materials, thicknesses and compositions. These samples were characterized physically and optically to determine their film composition, quality, and optical responses. Our results on metal–dielec...
متن کاملDefining a Superlens Operating Regime for Imaging Fluorescent Molecules
It has been shown that thin metal-based films can at certain frequencies act as planar near-field lenses for certain polarization components. A desirable property of such "lenses" is that they can also enhance and focus some large transverse spatial frequency components which contain sub-diffraction limit details. Over the last decade there has been much work in optimizing designs to reduce eff...
متن کاملInfluence of randomness on the effective dielectric function of metal-dielectric composites for metamaterial purposes
The effective dielectric function of metal-dielectric composites consisting of spherical particles randomly distributed in a matrix is numerically investigated. The study, based on the spectral density theory, shows that local field fluctuations may critically affect the composite performance for metamaterial applications. It appears that randomness significantly modifies the effective dielectr...
متن کاملon Characterization of metal / dielectric multilayers with in - situ ellipsometry
The project was completed on 31 December 2010. In this project, we did simulations for metal/dielectric multilayer structures, their applications as hyperlens for sub-wavelength imaging with resolution beyond diffraction limit, optimized metal (silver) films and started fabrication and characterization of dielectric films with in-situ ellipsometry monitoring the thickness and optical constants....
متن کاملImage quality deterioration due to phase fluctuation in layered superlens
Optical transfer function (OTF) and image spectrums of the layered metal (M)–dielectric (D) superlenses (MD)n (where n is the number of cycles) are analyzed via transfer matrix method and effective-medium model. It is shown that the magnitude of OTF (MTF) with a high cutoff wave vector does not guarantee high resolution; the fluctuation of phase of OTF (PTF) is also a prime factor causing super...
